Roughly €40,000. That's the gap between the new Range Rover Sport Electric and the Range Rover Electric in almost every European market that has published prices so far — and the spec sheet makes it hard to see where the money goes. Same battery, same motors, same charging hardware, near-identical official range.
Revealed on 29-30 September, about a month after its bigger sibling, the Range Rover Sport Electric is already open for orders in 121 countries. Portugal doesn't have an official price yet. So for anyone in Portugal weighing up a luxury electric SUV, the Range Rover Sport Electric vs Range Rover Electric question boils down to one thing: what do you actually give up by choosing the cheaper car?
Under the skin, these two are close to twins. Both are built in Solihull, UK, on JLR's MLA-Flex platform — the same one used for the plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel versions. In other words, this is not a dedicated EV platform.
The shared hardware list is long:
Sources disagree on peak charging power. JLR and the UK press quote 350 kW; EV Database lists 325 kW. In practice it barely matters: everyone agrees on about 22 minutes for 10-80%. On a 150 kW charger, figures published in Spain point to 38 minutes (EV Database estimates 42) — a more realistic scenario at many stops on MOBI.E, Portugal's national public charging network.
There are two powertrains, again shared by both models. The EV450 makes 331 kW (450 PS) and 677 Nm, and does 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The EV550 steps up to 405 kW (550 PS) and 850 Nm — the most torque ever in a Range Rover Sport — cutting 0-100 km/h to 4.5 seconds with Dynamic Launch engaged. Top speed is 200 km/h.
The EV450 is slightly more efficient (22.0 vs 22.3 kWh/100 km WLTP) and goes 8 km further on paper. In Spain, moving from 450 to 550 PS costs €11,900 in Dynamic HSE trim. The EV550 also gets the Dynamic Response Pro package and all-wheel steering as standard; on the EV450 they're optional.

It's a short list. And it's more about space and status than technology.
This is the loss you'll notice most day to day. With the rear seats up, the Sport offers 627 litres against the Range Rover's 733 — 106 litres less. Fold the seats and the gap widens to 285 litres (1,471 vs 1,756 L). For a family heading from Lisbon to the Algarve in August with suitcases, a pushchair and everything else, that's real.
The Sport is also 106 mm shorter and about 48 mm lower. Width and wheelbase are exactly the same, so rear legroom shouldn't be the big differentiator — headroom and boot space are.
The Range Rover is available in long-wheelbase (LWB) form, stretching to 5,252 mm with a 3,197 mm wheelbase. That's the version for people who spend a lot of time in the back seat — or get driven around. The Sport doesn't offer it.
Then there's what no spec sheet captures: presence. The Range Rover is the brand's flagship, with all the luxury and hotel-forecourt kudos that comes with it. For some buyers in this segment, that's exactly what they're paying for.
One figure to treat with caution: according to EV Database, the Sport's turning circle is 12.5 m versus 11 m for the Range Rover. The Range Rover number likely reflects standard rear-wheel steering, and neither figure is officially confirmed yet — worth checking with a dealer before giving it much weight.

Here's the twist. In some ways, the cheaper car is the more sophisticated one.
In switching to electric, the Range Rover lost its active anti-roll bars — the battery lowers the centre of gravity and reduces body roll, which let JLR save cost and weight. The Sport keeps them: its eARC system (part of the Dynamic Response Pro package) applies up to 1,400 Nm per axle to keep the body flat through corners.
JLR also claims a 61% stiffer body and a centre of gravity 73 mm lower, both compared with the plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport. Torque builds 50% faster than in the Range Rover Electric, damping is Sport-specific and firmer, and the Adaptive Dynamics system monitors 100 parameters 500 times per second. All-wheel steering is standard on the EV550.
Put simply: if you enjoy driving — not just being driven — the Sport is the more engaging of the two. On the mountain roads of Serra da Estrela or along the N2, that counts for something.
609 km WLTP for the Sport EV450, 611 km for the Range Rover EV450. The Sport EV550 is rated at 601 km. In the real world, those differences vanish.
EV Database estimates 490 km of combined real-world range for the Sport and 480 km for the Range Rover — the lower, 40 kg lighter car even edges ahead. JLR itself quotes "up to 537 km" in real-world use, an in-house figure with no homologation status.
What matters in Portugal is motorway driving. EV Database estimates 440 km for the Sport on the motorway in summer and 350 km in winter. Lisbon to Porto, at around 310 km, is doable without stopping for most of the year; Lisbon to the Algarve too. Porto to Faro means one stop — and at about 22 minutes for 10-80% on a high-power charger, that's a coffee break.
JLR hasn't announced Portuguese pricing yet, so everything below is our own estimate, not an official figure.
Spain is the best reference, with a full price list already published (prices include 21% VAT):
| Trim | EV450 | EV550 |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic SE | €120,450 | — |
| Dynamic HSE | €128,700 | €140,600 |
| Autobiography | €138,150 | €150,250 |
| First Edition | — | €153,350 |
Strip Spanish VAT from the €120,450 entry price and you get roughly €99,500. Add Portugal's 23% VAT (IVA) and you land at about €122,000. Electric cars are exempt from ISV, Portugal's vehicle registration tax, so there's nothing to add on top. Our estimate is therefore a starting price of €120,000-125,000 for the Range Rover Sport Electric in Portugal — in line with €120,400 in Germany and €123,197 in the Netherlands.
If the roughly €40,000 gap holds here, the Range Rover Electric should land above €160,000. For context, in Portugal the diesel Range Rover Sport SE currently starts at €99,400 and the Range Rover MHEV at €149,400.
Two tax notes for company buyers. Both cars sit well above the €62,500 threshold that allows VAT recovery on electric company cars, and the same threshold matters for autonomous taxation (tributação autónoma). IUC, Portugal's annual road tax, stays minimal because it's electric. Run the numbers with your accountant before deciding.
As for rivals, Spanish pricing gives a good sense of positioning: the Sport Electric sits above the Porsche Cayenne Electric (from €108,296) and BMW iX (from €88,700), but below the Mercedes EQS SUV (from €140,186).
Orders are open in 121 countries and UK deliveries begin in 2027. There's no confirmed date for Portugal, but it's reasonable to expect the first cars to arrive during 2027 as well, with official pricing announced before then.
JLR has not yet published Portuguese pricing, but the Spanish price list offers a solid proxy: the entry EV450 Dynamic SE costs €120,450 in Spain, which, adjusted for Portugal's 23% VAT and with no ISV registration tax on EVs, points to roughly €120,000 to €125,000 in Portugal. The EV550 starts at €140,600 in Spain, suggesting around €143,000 here. Notably, in Spain the EV550 costs only €3,500 more than the Range Rover Sport P460e plug-in hybrid.
Thanks to its 800V architecture, the 118.5 kWh usable battery charges from 10 to 80% in about 22 minutes on a 350 kW charger, adding up to 220 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. On a 250 kW unit the same top-up takes around 32 minutes, and on a 150 kW charger about 38 minutes. At home or at work, a 22 kW AC wallbox delivers a full charge in roughly 7 hours.
The Range Rover Sport Electric can tow up to 2,500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked, matching the Range Rover Electric, with a maximum tongue load of 250 kg according to EV Database. The tow hitch is optional. The navigation system adjusts range predictions when towing, which is handy for anyone pulling a boat or horse trailer, since energy consumption rises considerably.
Based on Spanish pricing, the Range Rover Sport Electric (from €120,450) sits above the Porsche Cayenne Electric (from €108,296) and the BMW iX (from €88,700), but below the Mercedes EQS SUV (from €140,186). According to EV Database, the Mercedes EQS SUV 450 4MATIC is about €5,800 cheaper in Germany and claims 40 km more range. The British SUV's trump card is off-road ability, with 900 mm wading depth and 45-degree gradient capability.
Orders opened in 121 countries at the end of September 2026, with first UK deliveries scheduled for 2027; there is no official date for Portugal yet, but deliveries are expected to start during 2027 as well. Orders go through the official Land Rover dealer network, which is also where Portuguese pricing should be announced. The battery is covered by an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty.
If you need the big boot, the long-wheelbase option or simply the car that says "flagship" when you pull up, the Range Rover earns its price — there's no shortcut to that. For almost everyone else, the Sport delivers the same battery, the same motors, the same range and a sharper chassis for around €40,000 less, based on known European pricing. The extra money mostly buys centimetres and status, not technology. Before signing anything, it's worth waiting for the official Portuguese price list to see whether the discount over its bigger sibling carries over here.
