MG IM5 and IM6: Price in Portugal and 655 km Range

The two premium EVs MG built to take on Tesla

655 km of WLTP range, a 10-to-80% charge in 17 minutes, and up to 751 hp. Those aren't Tesla figures — they're MG's. Or, to be precise, IM's: the premium sub-brand MG has just confirmed is heading to mainland Europe. After launching in the UK, Norway and Switzerland in July 2025, the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV reach France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in July 2026. Portugal isn't on the official list yet, but the rollout is closing in — and it's worth knowing what's coming before we talk MG IM5 and IM6 price Portugal.

The strategy is straightforward. IM (Intelligence in Motion) belongs to SAIC, MG's parent company, and it was built to attack exactly the segment Tesla owns. The IM5 squares up to the Model 3, the IM6 to the Model Y. That's a big leap for a brand best known until recently for the affordable MG4.

IM5: the sedan gunning for the Tesla Model 3

The IM5 is a D-segment sedan measuring 4.93 metres — around 21 cm longer than a Tesla Model 3. It comes in three variants, and range is where the story starts.

VariantBatteryPower0-100 km/hWLTP range10-80% charge
Standard Range75 kWh LFP (400V)217 kW / 295 hp6.8 s~489 km26 min (153 kW)
Long Range100 kWh NCM (800V)300 kW / 407 hp4.9 s655 km17 min (396 kW)
Performance AWD100 kWh NCM (800V)553 kW / 751 hp3.2 s~575 km17 min (396 kW)

The Long Range is the one that'll pull buyers in. The 655 km WLTP from the 100 kWh battery is enough to drive Lisbon to Faro with margin to spare before you think about a plug. And when you do need to charge, the 800V architecture does the rest: recovering 10 to 80% in 17 minutes means a coffee stop at a service area on the A1 sends you back out with hundreds of kilometres in hand. This is where IM goes head-to-head with Tesla — charging is clearly faster than the Model 3's.

At the top sits the Performance AWD, with 751 hp and 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. That's supercar territory in a family sedan.

IM6: the electric SUV for those who need more room

If you prefer the higher driving position and a bigger boot, there's the IM6, the SUV sibling. It shares its platform, batteries and mechanicals with the IM5 but offers 665 litres of boot space (plus a 32-litre frunk up front).

The Launch Edition adds air suspension and active damping control, which adjusts firmness ten times a second to suit the road. The IM6 is the direct alternative to the Tesla Model Y — with more range in Long Range trim and the same 800V ultra-fast charging.

Serious tech, and all of it standard

IM didn't hold back on equipment. Every version gets four-wheel steering — which gives the IM5 a turning circle under 10 metres (9.98 m exactly), remarkable for a car that's nearly five metres long. At low speed the rear wheels counter-steer to ease manoeuvres; on the motorway they turn the same way as the fronts for stability.

Inside, a 26.3-inch panoramic screen combines the instruments with the infotainment, joined by a second 10.5-inch touchscreen for climate. Add a 20-speaker sound system, panoramic roof, 50W wireless charging, ventilated and heated seats, and seven airbags. The "One-Touch iAD" system handles automated parking. In the UK the warranty is 7 years or 80,000 miles.

The international press has already warmed to it — Electrifying.com scored the IM5 8/10, praising the charging speed and tech but flagging weak regenerative braking (no true one-pedal mode) and a visually busy interior.

MG IM5 and IM6 price Portugal: what to expect

This is the part without a firm answer yet. There's no confirmed pricing for France or Portugal — it'll be announced at the July 2026 launch. What we have is the UK table as a reference point:

  • IM5 Standard Range: £39,450
  • IM5 Long Range: £44,995
  • IM5 Performance: £48,495
  • IM6 Long Range: £47,995
  • IM6 Performance: £50,995
  • IM6 Launch Edition: £52,995

Converted directly, that's somewhere between €46,000 and €62,000 at current exchange rates — and the UK prices already include VAT. For Portugal, one detail works in the buyer's favour: being fully electric, the IM5 and IM6 are exempt from ISV (the vehicle registration tax) and qualify for reduced IUC (annual road tax), unlike a combustion equivalent. That helps keep them competitive against a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, which play on exactly the same tax footing.

If you're shopping for an EV, it's worth seeing what's already on the market here while IM hasn't arrived officially. And when it does, the question will be simple: do you pay less for more range and faster charging than a Tesla? On the numbers, the answer looks promising. The Portuguese prices are what's left to confirm — and that's what we'll be watching.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no official Portuguese pricing yet — it will only be announced at the European launch in July 2026. As a reference, in the UK the IM5 starts at £39,450 (Standard Range), rises to £44,995 (Long Range) and reaches £48,495 (Performance) — roughly €46,000 to €56,000 at current exchange rates, VAT included. As a fully electric car, in Portugal it benefits from ISV exemption and reduced IUC, helping keep it competitive against a Tesla Model 3.

There is no confirmed date for Portugal. The IM5 and IM6 first reach France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in July 2026, after debuting in the UK, Norway and Switzerland in July 2025. Sales outside the UK remain under review due to EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, so a Portuguese launch should be treated as expected rather than confirmed.

The Long Range IM5, with its 100 kWh NCM battery, claims up to 655 km on the WLTP cycle — enough to cover Lisbon to Faro with margin to spare. The entry Standard Range, with a 75 kWh LFP battery, manages around 489 km, while the Performance AWD sits near 575 km. Real-world range in Portugal will depend on driving style, speed and climate, but the Long Range is clearly the most balanced variant.

The 100 kWh models use an 800V architecture and charge from 10 to 80% in just 17 minutes, at power above 350 kW — faster than the Tesla Model 3, which uses a 400V architecture. During a coffee stop at an A1 service area, the IM5 recovers enough range for several hundred kilometres. The entry 75 kWh version is 400V and takes 26 minutes for the same interval.

On paper, the IM5 offers more range (up to 655 km WLTP) and faster charging (17 minutes at 800V) than a Tesla Model 3, at a similar UK reference price. Being fully electric, it adds ISV exemption and reduced IUC in Portugal. The final call depends on the still-unconfirmed Portuguese pricing and MG's service network, but the proposition looks competitive in the premium electric sedan segment.
