Leapmotor A05S: the T03 Successor Coming to Portugal with More Range

Leapmotor A05S: the T03 Successor with 510 km Range

The Leapmotor T03 successor now has a face and a name: A05S

The T03 was the cheapest electric car on sale in Portugal when it arrived in April, with prices starting near €19,600. Now Leapmotor has shown us what replaces it: the A05S, revealed on 10 July 2026. And this is no minor refresh — it is a bigger, more advanced car with far more range.

For now the A05S launches in China. But Leapmotor sells in Europe through its joint venture with Stellantis — the same one that brought the T03 and C10 to our market. That makes the successor's arrival in Portugal a question of when, not if.

Leapmotor A05S specs: what changes versus the T03

Start with the basics. The A05S is bigger than the city car it replaces, and the difference shows most in interior space and range.

At 4.2 metres long, the A05S plays in a different league. The T03 is a pure city car built for tight streets; the A05S moves closer to a five-seat compact like the electric Peugeot 208, with a generous 2,605 mm wheelbase that translates into more rear legroom.

Under the skin, it shares almost everything with the brand's B03X SUV — it is effectively the hatchback version of that model. The differences come down to body-coloured wheel arches, reshaped side skirts and ten-spoke alloy wheels.

Leapmotor A05S range: up to 510 km on the Chinese cycle

This is the biggest leap over the T03. Leapmotor offers two LFP batteries, both from Chinese suppliers (Gotion High-tech and Zenergy):

  • 39.8 kWh — 95 PS (70 kW), 405 km on the CLTC cycle (roughly 330 km estimated WLTP)
  • 53 kWh — 122 PS (90 kW), 510 km on the CLTC cycle (roughly 420 km estimated WLTP)

One important caveat on the numbers: the 405 and 510 km figures are measured on China's CLTC cycle, always more optimistic than Europe's WLTP. That is why we include the WLTP estimates — the figure that actually matters for driving in Portugal. Even so, around 420 real kilometres in the top version is double the T03's 265 km WLTP. That is enough to drive Lisbon to Porto without stopping to charge.

The entry version, with 39.8 kWh and an estimated 330 km WLTP, is still more than enough for urban and regional use — which is exactly what this kind of car is built for.

LiDAR on a budget car? The bet that sets the A05S apart

The most surprising detail on the A05S sits on the roof: a LiDAR sensor mounted up top, the same laser technology usually reserved for premium cars and advanced driver assistance.

Seeing it on a car in this class is rare. It is a direct response to Chinese rivals — BYD already offers LiDAR on its Seagull — and it shows how far the price and technology war has gone in the small-EV segment. In China, A0-class electric cars already make up 32% of the EV market, with 314,000 units sold in June 2026 alone.

Whether that hardware survives the crossing to Europe, with all the cost and regulation that implies, is another question. But Leapmotor's intent is clear: offer more than rivals for the same money.

Leapmotor A05S price: what we know and what we don't

In China, the A05S targets a price between 50,000 and 80,000 yuan — roughly €6,280 to €10,050 at a straight exchange rate. Don't be fooled: that figure will not reach Portugal.

Chinese EVs climb sharply in price when they enter Europe, thanks to import duties, shipping, homologation and distribution margins. Just look at the T03 itself: it costs about €6,500 in China and landed in Portugal near €19,600. Applying that same logic, a European A05S price around €20,000 to €24,000 would be a realistic estimate for the entry version — but that is exactly that, an estimate. Leapmotor has confirmed neither price nor a European date.

There is also a naming wrinkle: when the A05S (and the B03X) reach Europe, they are expected to be sold as "B03", to avoid confusion with the Chinese naming.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no confirmed European price yet. In China, the A05S targets 50,000 to 80,000 yuan (roughly €6,280 to €10,050), but Chinese EVs climb sharply in price when they reach Europe due to import duties, shipping and homologation. Following the T03's own example — around €6,500 in China but near €19,600 in Portugal — an entry price between €20,000 and €24,000 would be a realistic estimate, though it remains unconfirmed.

There is no confirmed date. Its SUV sibling, the B03X, is already available to order in Europe, which suggests the hatchback version won't be far behind. Leapmotor will start building several models, including the A05, at the Stellantis plant in Figueruelas (Zaragoza), Spain, from 2027 — European production that should lower costs and speed up availability in the Portuguese market.

The A05S offers two LFP batteries: 39.8 kWh with 405 km CLTC (around 330 km estimated WLTP) and 53 kWh with 510 km CLTC (around 420 km estimated WLTP). The CLTC figures are measured on China's cycle, always more optimistic than Europe's WLTP, so the WLTP estimates are the ones that matter for driving in Portugal. Even so, the roughly 420 real kilometres of the top version are nearly double the T03's 265 km WLTP.

The A05S is positioned as a direct rival to the BYD Dolphin Surf and the Dacia Spring in the affordable small-EV segment. Its standout card is technology: a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor for advanced driver assistance, rare in this class and a direct response to BYD's offering. At 4.2 metres long and with up to an estimated 420 km WLTP, the A05S bets on more space and range than many rival city cars.

When the A05S and the B03X SUV reach Europe, they are expected to be sold under the B03 name to avoid confusion with the Chinese naming scheme. This is common practice for Leapmotor International, the joint venture with Stellantis (51% Stellantis / 49% Leapmotor) that already brought the T03 and C10 to Portugal. The final name for the Portuguese market will only be known at the official launch.

When will the Leapmotor A05S arrive in Portugal?

There is no confirmed date. What we know points to a likely arrival that is still to be scheduled.

The B03X, its SUV sibling, is already available to order in Europe, which suggests the hatchback version won't be far behind. More important for us: Leapmotor will start building several models — including the A05 — at the Stellantis plant in Figueruelas (Zaragoza), Spain, from 2027. European production means lower costs and faster availability in our market.

For anyone hunting a cheap electric car in Portugal in 2026, the T03 remains Leapmotor's entry point, alongside rivals like the Dacia Spring and BYD Dolphin Surf. The A05S is what comes next: more space, more range and more technology, at a price we will still have to wait to learn. Worth keeping an eye on the brand's next announcements.
