Introduction to the GAC Aion UT
As GAC, a Chinese automotive giant, enters the European market, Portuguese consumers can expect more options in the compact electric vehicle segment. GAC, a 70-year-old state-owned company, has already established its presence in Portugal with the Aion V since September, and now plans to launch the Aion UT in Europe in 2026. This model, designed to compete with the VW ID.3, marks a significant expansion of GAC into the European C-segment.
Design and Dimensions
The GAC Aion UT is a compact electric vehicle ideal for urban traffic, as suggested by the acronym UT (Urban Traffic). Its dimensions are 4.27 meters in length, 1.85 meters in width, and approximately 1.58 meters in height, with a long wheelbase of 2.75 meters to maximize interior space. The exterior design is tailored to European tastes, thanks to GAC's European design center in Milan.
Cargo Capacity
The Aion UT offers a luggage compartment of 440 liters with the rear seats upright, surpassing the ID.3's space. However, the capacity with the rear seats folded down has not yet been disclosed by GAC. During a practical test, legroom was adequate, though headroom could be an issue for taller individuals, particularly due to the standard panoramic sunroof.

The vehicle uses a 60 kWh LFP battery, promising a maximum range of up to 420 km. During tests, energy consumption was slightly higher than advertised, reaching 19.8 kWh/100 km on a predominantly highway drive.

The DC charging capacity of the Aion UT is 130 kW, allowing it to charge from 30% to 80% in 24 minutes. However, starting the count from 30% instead of the usual 10% raises some questions about the actual charging performance.

The interior of the Aion UT is notable for its lilac color scheme, differing from the dominance of dark plastics found in many competitors. While the build quality is solid, the materials used, such as synthetic leather, do not convey a premium feel.

The cockpit is dominated by a 14.6-inch touchscreen and an 8.8-inch display for driving information. However, the voice interface, responding to the command "Hey Baby", might not be well-received by European drivers due to its informal tone.
